The Roots of a Legacy
It began in historic Jackson Ward with Neverett Eggleston Sr., owner of the iconic Eggleston Hotel—a vibrant haven for Black travelers and musicians listed in The Green Book. His son, Neverett A. Eggleston Jr. (affectionately known as "Sugarfoot"), carried that entrepreneurial spirit forward, spending decades managing family hospitality properties and co-founding Richmond's Metropolitan Business League (MBL) in 1968 to support Black-owned businesses.
Sugar's Crab Shack & The Next Generation Inspired by his father’s nickname, Neverett Jr. helped lay the groundwork for Sugar’s Crab Shack, which opened on Chamberlayne Avenue to bring fresh, high-quality, walk-up seafood to the neighborhood. Famous for steamed blue crabs, seasoned fried fish, and quick takeout, Sugar's quickly became a Northside staple and a beloved community gathering spot. To ensure the family's culinary tradition thrived, Neverett Jr.’s son, Neverett Eggleston III, teamed up with his cousin, Ralph Fields. Together, the duo partnered to carry the multi-generational legacy forward—blending time-honored family recipes with fresh energy to serve the Richmond community with pride.
Every plate we serve honors nearly a century of tradition: quality seafood, authentic hospitality, and a lasting family name.
